computer generation 1945 - 1965

Computer Generation

1. Generation - 1 (1945 - 1959)
The characteristics of a generation of computer:
a. Components that are used vacuum tubes for the circuit.
b. The program can only be made with machine language (machine language)
c. Using the concept of stored program with its main memory was magnetic core storage.
d. Using external storage of magnetic tape and magnetic disks
e. Physical size and require a large computer room is spacious.
f. Fast cooling heat so that the necessary equipment.
g. The process is not quick enough

h. Small Simpananya
i. Requires large electric power
j. Its main orientation is a business application
Example of a generation computer: ENIAC, SEC, etc. IBM701

2. Generation - 2 (1959 - 1965)

The characteristics of second generation computer:
a. The components used are the transistor to the circuit, was developed at Bell Laboratories by John Bardeen, William Shockley and Walter Brattain in 1947.
b. Courses can be created with high-level languages such as FORTRAN, COBOL, ALGOL
c. Main memory capacity is large enough with the development of magnetic core storage. Can save tens of thousands of characters.
d. Using external storage of magnetic tape and magnetic disk removable disk or disk-shaped packs.
e. Having the ability to process real time and time sharing, real time savings can be made for use outside of its direct-Access, such as magnetic disks. So the information needed can be generated instantly. Medium time sharing allows multiple users to use the computer together and the computer will divide his time for every = each user.
f. Computer physical size is smaller than the first generation computer
g. The process was quick operation can process millions of operations per second
h. Require less electrical power
i. The orientation is not only business applications but also to the application technique
Examples of second generation computer: PDP-1, IBM 7070, IBM 7080, NRC 300, etc.
